Liberia Guanacaste Airport Expansion Positive Impacts

As Guanacaste tourism grew in number, its capital city responded with the construction of its own international airport. Just over the ten years after its completion, the international airport is in need of renovations in order to help accommodate the thousands of flights in Costa Rica. The Liberia International Airport or also known as the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport is located in the northern part of Costa Rica. This airport lies in the capital city of Guanacaste Costa Rica. The setup of the international airport is to cater those tourists who wish to enjoy the great beaches and the wonderful weather of the region. This airport is named in honor of the former president of Costa Rica. His idea was to build an airport and who was supporting the development and expansion of Guanacaste. The airport was opened in the year 1995.

One of the Costa Rican specialists in vacation rentals has indeed welcomed the new development plans and affirms that this will have a positive impact on the country’s already increasing tourism industry. August has been a great month for Guanacaste tourism with the report of 6.5% increase in the arrivals of the tourists. The Liberia Guanacaste Airport is servicing the beach and sun vacation province of Guanacaste. Guanacaste Vacations is the home of the most fabulous Costa Rica villas. According to some report by the Cost Rican Tourism Institute that the Liberia International Airport received 27% more of their tourism arrivals in the first half of the year compared to the same months of last year.

Guanacaste is the home of some of most beautiful beaches like Flamingo, Tamarindo, and Golfo de Papagayo. The opening and the expansion of the airport demonstrates how the terminal has positively affected the tourism industry of the region. The new $42 million airport arrival terminal has the capacity to attend 1,500 passengers all together. Of the beach theme design, the terminal will include various restaurants as well as having boutique stores for the convenience of the tourists. Currency exchange service and car rental is also available. In addition, the airport car parks have increased their capacity to 430 vehicles. There are a total of 14 airlines that offer flights to Liberia Airport including Jet Blue, American Airlines, and Delta.

If the progress continues at the present rate, the arrivals to Guanacaste after August this year will be much different. There will be two-story terminal, more amenities, boarding ramps, more service personnel, new commercial areas, and expedited processing through immigration. This new terminal will not only expand to double the current capacity on their operations but it will also increase the passenger’s security and the quality of services provided to the tourists. As part of the plan, it will increase the size of the runways in order to receive large aircrafts as well. The expansion of the terminal is an essential step in recharging the tourism industry of Guanacaste. Beyond the additional flights that have been already confirmed from El Salvador and Denver, there is also a progress in the negotiations for the future arrivals to Liberia by these new airlines from Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe.
