Cocktails and Mixology have become an important part of the culinary scene of every country and as food does, an expression of its culture. Today we bring you all the information you need about the best Costa Rica Cocktails and the mixology panorama.
Costa Rica, a country to make friends
Our Pura Vida land was ranked first last year as the best country in the world to make friends by the InterNations. Even though this was a research focused on expats and quality of life variables, the truth is that Ticos truly enjoy meeting new people and going out for a drink.
Social activities are an important part of the lifestyle of every Costa Rican. Since childhood, we are raised seeing our families get together every Saturday or Sunday (or both days), or finding any excuse to have a drink with friends.
Drinks are part of our idiosyncrasy the same way to make friends is. Costa Rica cocktails are stories, anecdotes, laughter and tears. There are Costa Rica cocktails for everyone and for every moment: sweet, spicy, strong or mild.
Classic Costa Rica cocktails
For more than 160 years, Guaro has been the liquor of Costa Ricans. Created by the National Liquor Factory with the purpose of promoting the sugarcane industry, the Guaro is a Brandy or “Aguardiente” of great purity and quality.
So, when you think about the all-time favorites Costa Rica Cocktails, most certainly every Tico will mention one or more containing Guaro.
The great king of Costa Rica Cocktails and the one you have to try when visiting our country is Chiliguaro. It is an easy and delicious recipe:
- 1 L – Tomato Juice (spicy or mild)
- ¼ L – Guaro Cacique
- 1 oz. – Tabasco
- 1 Tsp – Salsa Lizano (typical Costa Rican sauce)
- 1 Tsp – Black pepper
- 1 Tsp – Salt
- Juice of 2 limes.
Pour all the ingredients, stir. Serve chill. Use tall shot glasses with salt in the rim.
Another classic Costa Rica cocktail is the Guaro Sour, our version of the American sour.
- 2 oz – Guaro Cacique
- 2 oz – simple syrup
- 1 lime cut in wedges
- Splash of Club Soda
Muddle the lime wedges with the Guaro and syrup in a rocks glass. Add ice cubes to the top. Add the splash of Club Soda. You can also serve the glass with salt in the rim and a lemon wedge as decoration.
